![]() Still, it's much more true to life - I mean, we actually see him moving furniture around, which, as Bruno will discover after a few minutes of marriage, is a big part of commitment. ![]() Once you start dissecting Bruno Mars videos, you know you've hit a low point. Those of us more acquainted with metaphor will ask ourselves if he's really singing about what he would do for a woman, or what he would do for music, but therein lies insanity. It symbolizes, I guess, the burden of love. ![]() In it, Bruno, dressed like Arthur Fonzarelli, lugs a piano around by a rope, through town, to his girlfriend's house, over a bridge and toward some train tracks. The video for "Grenade" is somewhat better. So, instead, they fill our heads with this useless idea that what love really requires is physical self-immolation, like to be truly in love means to be a psychopathic suicide risk. Musicians are some of the least trustworthy bunch of people I know, and they as a group are not known to be really faithful, family types. One must assume that The Commitments knew what commitment means, but they're the exception, trust me. Mars isn't alone here, pop music is full of whining romantics who have no idea what commitment really means. ![]() Like the romantic teens for which he's singing, at most he'll mope around for a few days, ostensibly pining for his lost "love" and writing bad poetry.Īnd if he really wanted to show how much he loved his significant other, instead of, "I would catch a grenade for ya," the lyric of the song would be something like, "I would go to work every day and commute home to help the kids do their homework and take out garbage for ya." Not quite as catchy, I'll grant you, but far more meaningful. He's not going to do any of those things, for real. Bruno Mars is exaggerating at the very least, first of all. But I digress.)Īnyway, I find the song vaguely insulting. Worse, Mars might have been a Pink Floyd fan and titled his masterpiece "Several Small Species of Musician in a Studio Grooving With a Mixer." Like three of you will get that joke. (Come to think of it, it wouldn't have been much better, had the song been called "Loss," or some such pseudo-poetic drivel.
